So… I read this article yesterday about school dress codes. Its HERE. Take a read. I am of two minds about the whole thing really because I want to be up in arms about the affect things like this have on freedom of speech and what not. BUT… I have two things to use as an argument… against kids dressing however they want. One is the Supreme Court, and two, the US Constitution.
Supreme Courts: Time and again this same subject has come up before the US Supreme Court, and each time it has said the same thing. Each School in the US has an over-riding job – to provide an education, and that on a case-by-case basis, they have the right to ensure that the mission of teaching our nations children goes through. Regardless of what that influence may be, if the School’s Administration (the Principal) has the right to approve or disprove anything as disruptive to the school’s mission, and may take whatever steps are necessary to enforce that. As long as said enforcement is not abusive to the student.
Constitution: There are absolutely NO rights given to anyone in the Country under the age of 18 by any part of the Constitution. Your rights as an American citizen don’t start until you turn 18. Therefore you have no rights. There are Federal Guide Lines, and State Statutes which protect the individuals under that age, but, you have no rights to anything other than safety. None. So, anyone who speaks out about a teenagers “Freedom of Speech” has no idea what they are referring to, since no such thing exists for them.
