So… what does everyone think about equality? I ask this for a specific reason which I will relate later, but I am seriously interested in what everyone believes is fair? There are a number of things happening in our society and around the world right now which bring to mind equality. And by equality I mean equal for all. All treated exactly the same everywhere. Doesn’t matter who or what you are, but entitled to the same rights and benefits no matter what you do or where you live. No matter your skin color, race, religion, sex, body condition, nothing. Everyone gets the same. You work x number of hours doing a specific job, you get paid x amount of money. So on and so forth. I don’t believe in special privileges for anyone who hasn’t earned those privileges. For instance, I don’t believe that a Black person, simply because they are Black, should get something more than me, a Caucasian. I don’t believe a man should get more than a woman. I don’t believe a Jew should get something special and Muslim not. Its one thing to get something because you have worked for it. It’s another entirely to get something offered and say no, because you don’t want it for whatever reason. But, to expect special treatment because you have y circumstances is wrong. I’m fairly obstinate about this. For Instance: I don’t believe that people who are handicapped should get special parking. I totally understand the bathroom thing, but special parking?? No. When the technology did not exist to allow people with body issues to get around easier, that I understood the need for. Now? Not at all. There are all kinds of assists for this nowadays, and I don’t believe they should have designated parking.
I disagree with the idea that things should be done on this basis. If I want to be chivalrous, that’s different, but I don’t think that I should be EXPECTED to be such. Now, granted I am a nice guy, and I make way for everyone. It’s just polite to make space when you can for someone else to either have a place to sit down, or squeeze in so your neighbor can get a space in out of the rain. It’s also polite to move out of the way when someone says “Excuse me”. But for a woman to complain to me that I should get out of the way for her, BECAUSE she is a woman, that’s just plain obnoxious.
I think its ridiculous that anyone ever had to fight for their rights. I think its ridiculous that anyone ever considered themselves more important than anyone because of the circumstances of their birth. I think its ridiculous that I should be anything extra for someone just because they think so. Merit is a much more important indicator for me, than birth.
