So, I was trading emails with Poolie and I discovered something disturbing. Not about Poolie mind you, but about medicine, and certain forms of psychiatric treatment. Something that made me at once sad and afraid all at the same time. Did you know that the medical community still embraces “electroshock therapy” as a treatment for various mental disorders? Good God, we might as well be playing Frankenstein in our basements! How can anyone believe that the application of direct current through electrodes to ANYONE as a form of treatment is an INTELLIGENT decision? I mean honestly, you might as well be operating with stone knives and bearskins!
I want someone to explain to me how an official form of torture can be prescribed as a COURSE OF TREATMENT!
Yah, I got the whole cardiac arrest thing. I know what it means with they put the paddles to someone and yell CLEAR!, but that’s a case of this person is in immediate life threatening circumstances. Not a case of look at the pretty butterflies. I mean really… there has got to be a better solution!
I am not kidding or raving here either. This form of treatment is being used as a method to combat depression for cryin’ out loud! This is almost a subject for Michael Moore to take up! The Geneva convention lists things which cannot be done to prisoners of war. Know what’s listed under torture that cannot be used on them “…that inflicts physical or mental pain.” Gee, do you think electric shock falls under that category? How can anyone possibly believe that this is an intelligent solution? Seriously, this is barbaric guys. How can we as a nation tacitly endorse this? We have issues in our cities and suburbs, homelessness and hunger abound around the country, and enemies foreign and domestic exist on our doorstep, but really we think we can solve our issues by the judicious application of electricity? We're doomed.
